Ingredient Spotlight: Arbutin

Looking for a way to achieve a radiant, more even-toned complexion without compromising the integrity of your skin? With so many brightening products on the market, it’s easy to be tempted by treatments and creams that promise amazing results essentially overnight. So many companies make it seem like the treatments that require an extended healing period are the only way to achieve your glass skin goals. But here’s the good news: there’s a much gentler alternative to hydroquinone and other brightening (aka bleaching) agents that can give you the results you desire, without compromising your skin’s barrier. This gentle-yet-effective miracle worker is alpha arbutin, and it can be found in many different Amarte products. We’re excited to share more about what makes this ingredient so incredible.

What is Arbutin?

Arbutin is derived from plant sources, and can be found in blueberries, bearberries, cranberries, mulberries and pears. There are actually two forms of arbutin, alpha and beta. Amarte products specifically include alpha-arbutin, which is the preferred choice for medical grade formulations due to it being the more stable and effective form.

How does it work?

Arbutin works by blocking tyrosinase, a key enzyme involved in melanin synthesis. When the skin is exposed to UV radiation, tyrosinase triggers melanin production, leading to pigmentation irregularities. By inhibiting tyrosinase activity, arbutin prevents the overproduction of melanin, resulting in a more even skin tone. This process lightens existing dark spots and helps prevent new ones from forming.

Benefits of Arbutin for the skin:

The benefits of arbutin in skin care extend beyond its ability to address pigmentation concerns. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Arbutin’s antioxidant properties combat free radicals generated by factors like pollution and UV exposure, reducing the risk of premature aging. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties soothe irritation, prevent breakouts, and offer a brightening effect on the skin. Whether dealing with acne scars or age spots, arbutin effectively fades these imperfections over time, enhancing overall skin health and clarity.
